Chapter One’s at-home tutoring program is paid for through Jordan’s Principle. Since November 2024, there have been major federal delays in processing Jordan’s Principle applications across the country. This is affecting many families and service providers.

What This Means

Your child will have their tutoring schedule reduced to one session per week, starting September 2, 2025. Your child’s tutor may change, depending on schedule availability

What We’re Doing

We are actively working with Indigenous leaders and government representatives to resolve this issue. We’ll let you know as soon as possible when your child can resume tutoring at their regular schedule.

Why is my child’s tutoring being reduced?
Funding is not available at this time because of federal government delays in processing Jordan’s Principle requests. Chapter One has always covered the cost of tutoring until Jordan’s Principle applications are approved and paid. However, this is no longer sustainable with the current tutoring schedule.

To continue supporting as many children as possible, Chapter One is reducing tutoring to one session per week, starting September 2, 2025.

When will my child's tutoring schedule change?
Changes will begin the week of September 2, 2025.

How long will this last?
We don’t know how long this change will last. As funding resumes, we will return to the regular tutoring schedule.

Will my child have the same tutor?
Whenever possible, your child will continue working with the same tutor. At times, we may need to assign a new tutor based on schedules and availability.

What is Chapter One doing about Jordan’s Principle delays?

We are committed to supporting the reading of First Nations children and we are doing everything we can to secure funding. We are working with Indigenous leaders, government representatives, legal advisors, and anybody else who can lend a hand.

Can I pay for my child’s tutoring myself?
Yes. Parents or family members can cover the cost of tutoring for their child until Jordan’s Principle funding payments resume. The cost of tutoring is $330/month. Email infoca@chapterone.org to learn more.

Are all children in at-home tutoring affected by this change?
No. Interim funding provided by Nations, private foundations and grants will sustain the regular tutoring schedule for some children for a limited time.

How can I help my child read?
- Have your child practice reading on their own or with you on the Chapter One student platform on your tablet or smartphone. You’ll need to enter your child’s username and password. If you don’t know your child’s login information, please contact your ELI or infoca@chapterone.org.

- Choose from engaging reading activities on Chapter One’s Reading Pinterest Page and get ideas to build phonics skills, reading fluency, comprehension and confidence in our Reading Resources.

- Visit the Chapter One Global Free Library and explore 42 original e-storybooks co-created with Indigenous writers, illustrators and Elders, featuring recorded audio clips of Elders speaking foundational words in the first languages of their communities.
